INNOVATTION DELIVERS CUTTING-EDGE CONNECTION

Engenheiro Luís Carlos Berrini Avenue in São Paulo is considered one of the city’s main corporate hubs, along with Paulista and Faria Lima Avenues. It is an important business center, home to around 900 companies, and where approximately 200,000 people commute to every day. Those figures alone reflect the critical need for quality mobile coverage. QMC accepted the challenge of developing an innovative infrastructure project in the region with the intent of raising the quality of service to an optimum level.

Constructing new macro towers in the area has always been a traditional way to solve this connectivity problem. Although such a dense region has little to no space available for greenfield projects, and buildings are too tall for rooftop installations. Consequently, it was necessary to develop a unique compact wireless solution that would serve the greater public while being close to the user without occupying too much physical space.
Using an exclusivity agreement to operate on existing bus stops all along the avenue, QMC successfully developed an SLS project to serve their clients’ needs. From a technical point of view, the challenge was more related to increasing the existing network’s capacity to handle the excess data volume rather than strengthening the coverage. Along Berrini Avenue, there is a continuous flow of people practically throughout the day, during business hours, and then into the night, when bars and restaurants stay busy serving patrons until the wee hours of the morning.

Lately, Berrini is not only known as a business hub. Brazil’s largest festival of the year, Carnival, has been given a designated space on the avenue spanning several street blocks, which attracts thousands of revelers. During this national holiday, quality mobile coverage is essential for making calls, sharing videos and photos, and keeping the economy afloat. Local merchants (restaurants, cafes, street vendors, and shopping malls) need a reliable wireless connection to use their POS machines and receive mobile payments.

To better serve users on all those occasions, strategic points were mapped along the avenue and its surroundings, including stretches of Marginal Pinheiros and Chucri Zaidan Avenue. QMC deployed 26 SLS nodes interconnected by optical fiber, significantly increasing the capacity of the network in the region. The results were optimal: the public outside can now use their devices with the same signal quality as inside their office. Whether located on the street, in cafes and restaurants, or using public transportation and driving their cars, an user can continue with their daily routine of placing video calls, sending documents, or simply streaming a movie or series without connection issues.

PIONEERING TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATIVE SERVICE

The SLS fiber deployment employed a technology called micro trenching (an installation model with thinner ducts for the fiber to pass through and smaller, shallower cuts in the asphalt). This mechanism was licensed by the Sao Paulo Municipality and used in a ground-breaking way in the region. This particular solution had a purpose: there is a water stream high beneath Berrini Avenue. Hence there were strict restrictions on how deep one could excavate to lay the fiber underground.

In addition to the bus stops, in which the SLS are installed inside totems, there are other SLS nodes implemented in a similar fashion with urban furniture, carefully designed so as not to impact the prevailing urban landscape. The project and its execution are 100% licensed by the city’s architectural departments.
These strategically positioned SLS nodes gave the region-wide signal coverage and increased capacity. The infrastructure brings the signal directly to the end user with high performance, largely in part due to the relative positioning close to street level. Furthermore, it offloads traffic from the surrounding macro network, which is already overwhelmed in the region. The overall solution also improves signal availability on the lower-level floors of nearby buildings, most of which are commercial.

The project’s final design makes 4G and 5G NR services available to users, reinforcing coverage and capacity, and seamlessly transforming the region.
