QMC’s First C-DAS in Healthcare

The buildings attained better connectivity in fewer than 6 months

Hospital do Coração do Brasil (HCBr) and Hospital Santa Luzia (HSL) are located in Brasília, Brazil’s capital. The hospitals are regional leaders in quality and service and form part of the D’Or São Luiz network, the largest network of private hospitals in Latin America.

Separated by a corridor, the hospitals suffered from poor cellular signal quality for external and internal communication between medical staff and patients.

REDE D’OR SÃO LUIZ IN NUMBERS

Hospital do Coração do Brasil (HCBr): Expertise in Cardiovascular Diseases
Founded in 2007, HCBr is specialized in cardiac and vascular pathologies, featuring a surgical center, cardiology ICU, 24-hour cardiovascular emergency services, outpatient clinic, and a full range of diagnostic exams. The hospital is certified for excellence by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). The walkway connecting HCBr to Hospital Santa Luzia enhances service integration and specialty support.

Hospital Santa Luzia (HSL): High-Complexity Cases

Over the years, HSL has established itself as one of the most recognized hospitals in Brazil. Founded in the early 1970s, it initially specialized in ENT, ophthalmology, and maternity care. Today, it covers areas such as mastology, pediatrics, proctology, and urology, among others. HSL is divided into:

– Basement (Diagnostic Imaging Center),
– Ground Floor (ER, lab, inpatient unit, ground floor ICU),
– 1st Floor (Medical Inpatient Units),
– 2nd Floor (Clinical and Surgical Inpatient Units and Surgical ICU),
– 3rd Floor (ICU, Specialty Clinical Units),
– 4th Floor (Surgical Block).

QMC: The Ideal Partner for Enhanced Connectivity

Without an indoor connectivity network, the hospitals needed a mobile coverage solution that would not interfere with medical equipment and could also modernize their systems. QMC Telecom provided a centralized solution that interconnected the hospitals and delivered 100% mobile coverage in under six months.

The implemented system is called C-DAS, a centralized solution designed to optimize carrier infrastructure, functioning as an extension of the existing network without compromising DAS. It enables network expansion from a single concentration point, often eliminating the need for additional investments.

For these hospitals, a single QMC equipment room located outside Hospital Santa Luzia ensures connectivity for both buildings. QMC installed the fiber-optic infrastructure to support data traffic to HCBr. Small antennas were placed in key areas such as the ground floor, basement, cafeterias, ICUs, and technical zones with high foot traffic.

– 23,000 m² of covered area (7,668 m² in HCBr and 15,320 m² in HSL)
– 247 antennas (164 in HSL and 83 in HCBr)
– 16 Remote Units (10 in HSL and 6 in HCBr)
– 6 Sectors (3 in each hospital)
– 2×2 MIMO
– 11,000 annual surgeries
– 150,000 emergency visits per year
– 21,000 annual hospitalizations

Challenges

QMC’s solution was deployed across all hospital areas, delivering high-quality mobile signal to every floor while maintaining low radiation levels to comply with sensitive hospital zones. The signal does not cause any health risks and operates on frequencies distinct from those used by medical equipment, such as MRI machines.

From planning to implementation, QMC’s team mapped out antenna placements and installations to avoid operational disruptions.

Ready for the Future

With rapid technological advancements and 5G on the horizon, hospitals must prioritize patient experience—from faster service and diagnostics to the potential for remote surgeries.

Monitoring

The C-DAS system is connected to QMC’s Network Operations Center (NOC), offering full visibility and continuous monitoring. The NOC ensures optimal system performance 24/7 through reports and dashboards.
